Spring is Almost Here
Spring is all set to arrive.
As I took a picture of this batch of haarsingar( night jasmine/parijaat) flowers I crocheted in a 10 hour flight from Rome to home, it instantly transported me to the memories of our Delhi home 35 years ago.
Ammi had frantically hunted for a sapling of Haarsingar plant, which she then planted and nurtured like a child for years, since 1979. Now it was a tree laden with millions of these blossoming beauties.
Every morning as I stepped out of the house to go to my school, these flowers, fallen overnight carpeted the entire driveway. Ammi stood at the door to say Khuda Hafiz and to remind, "Tread carefully, don't trample them."
Before Papa took out the car from the garage, she made sure she picked up every fresh flower and placed them in a glass bowl on the dining table. The distinct aroma of night jasmine infused the indoors instantly.
We lost Ammi 2 years ago. I am crocheting these flowers are part of a series of floral hand crocheted earings called BIBLA earings. They will likely be available for sale in coming weeks, coinciding with arrival of Spring. Handmade with tender loving care in each loop, they will be limited in numbers.
Ammi often used freshly plucked chameli, motia or haarsingaar as earings, in a silver wire. The earings I am making are inspired by her and will be a loving tribute to her fresh floral earings and her expertise in hand embroidery.
